RECEATIONAL GYMNASTICS

Recreational gymnastics is both beneficial and fun for children of all ages. During class, students use all muscle groups while learning skills and having fun. It is a great activity for developing strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, spatial awareness, confidence, and self-esteem - enhancing the ability to perform most other sports. In this day and age when too many children do not get enough exercise, gymnastics is the best activity to provide a total fitness program.

Fundamentals of gymnastics will be taught on all four of the Olympic events including:

* Vault
* Uneven Bars
* Balance Beam
* Floor Exercise

As well as:

* Trampoline
* Tumble Track

Each class begins with a general warm-up and stretching. During class, the children will work on three or mo

re events each week. Emphasis is placed on learning new skills / routines, as well as r

einforcing good basic technique. Strong emphasis is placed on body awareness and safety.

PRE-SCHOOL GYMNASTICS

Our preschool gymnastics classes offer activities that are appropriate for their developmental level. The main ingredient is FUN! Any youngster would love a fun-filled learning experience in our colorful gym full of apparatus and mats. Watch your child smile while moving, learning and growing!

One of the objectives of Premier is FUN! Of course, this is cool with the kids, but parents sometimes don't always agree. Your preschooler can learn and have fun. At Premier we realize the importance of fun in a learning setting, especially for preschoolers. Adults often feel that when fun is present, learning is not. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Why is fun so important? All well - adjusted, life long learners at some point during their formative years formed a subconscious association when presented with a learning situation approximating: Challenge = Risk = Learning = fun & excitement! On other words, a challenge is worthy of my best effort in and of itself. The value of this association becomes even more apparent when inspecting the opposite association that is prevalent in today's teenagers and young adults: Challenge = risk = failure = fear & anxiety. For a person possessing this negative association the pain of possible failure is simply not worth the risk. This person then learns to insulate themselves from their fear and anxiety by creative, clever excuses and displaying apathetic attitudes about "trying" such as: "who cares?" or, "why should I even bother to try, I'll never be able to get it anyway". O.K...now that you know a little more about the substance of Premier, we have a favor to ask. SHHHH!...Don't tell the kids: They think Premier is just pure FUN!

At these ages, the social skills of sharing, helping others, and listening politely are as important to learn as gymnastics skills. Gymnastics classes are typically the first experience with a "school" setting. These classes cater to the children's need for social development as well as movement education.

Students are presented with basic gymnastics skills such as rolling, bouncing, running, swinging, jumping, and balancing. Body positions are instilled through repetition. More difficult skills such as backward rolls, handstands, and cartwheels are attempted with the aid of the teacher. They are presented with combinations of skills to learn in order to improve memory. The learning of proper gymnastics terminology is also an important element of the curriculum.

At about age 4, progressions of challenging skills for vault, bars, beam, tumbling, and trampoline are presented. The teacher may "spot" the child during skill performance for safety and learning purposes. Safety is foremost with all age groups. With an increased attention span, and improved strength and flexibility, gymnastics skills are acquired more easily at this age.

At about 5 years old, skill acquisition gets easier due to their ability to listen attentively, analyze others, and assimilate information. Physical maturity enables them to perform skills more easily. Through proper progressions, spotting, and repetition, they are capable of mastering many impressive skills and sequences.

Scholastic advantages exist for physically active children. Studies show a direct correlation between physical movement and reading readiness. Additionally, gymnastics students experience numerous movement patterns which enhance memory development and vocabulary as well as longer attention spans, increased communication skills, general problem solving skills and improved self-esteem.

PREMIER PANTHERS COMPETITIVE CHEER PROGRAM

Not many years ago, to be a cheerleader, you had to be one of the select few chosen to represent the spirit of the school at athletic events. While still a special treat for the chosen few, it was to the exclusion of many others. Now, competitive cheerleading is one of the fastest growing activities in the country. Any child, with any level of experience, even before they begin school, can become part of a true cheerleading squad, wear real cheerleading uniforms and compete nationally against the best cheerleaders in the country. And more and more are becoming cheerleaders at Premier Gym! Not only did our girls compete at Nationals, many of our squads were NATIONAL CHAMPIONS or even GRANDE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

Our Premier Panthers program consists of multiple squads of girls and boys, from 3 years old through high school, who compete both locally and nationally. Premier teams compete across the city, across the state, and our older girls compete across the country in several competitions each year. Training continues year-around and the typical competition season is 6 months long. Our cheerleader athletes learn motions, spirit, stunts and a great deal of tumbling. Tumbling is especially important to cheerleaders, and we are fortunate that we can have our cheerleaders exposed to the best tumbling instructors in Pittsburgh.

We never turn away a cheerleader at Premier Gym...it is our job as coaches to train, even the beginner athlete, to become the champion they always set out to be!
